I was part of this job fair which was held at 25th and 26th July 2009. This was a good experience as I represented as an Employer here where as four years back I was the part of the applicants. I got into the campus and got to see the young crowd looking for jobs. There was a different kinds of groups all together. Some of them where desperate for jobs and some came just to freak out and others to try their luck. The total number of participants numbered to 5000+ for two days.
As I was part of it, I got to meet many talented youngsters, without a job.. I observed that the applicants are not sure of what kind of job they are interested. They have no set goals for themselves, they never know which path they need to take to build their career. Their main motto is to just get a job. When it comes to choosing a way to move ahead with a career, these kids are trying to take any way, which might not be right one, when they open their eyes. It is best said in the story of “Alice in Wonderland”, which goes like this:
Alice asked:“Would you tell me which way I ought to go from here?”
The cat replied:“That depends a good deal on where you want to get.”
Alice says: “I really don’t care where” replied Alice.
Then The cat said: “Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.”
The findings of this job fair were:
· There is plenty of resources which we are unable to use even as an employer and the aspirants
· The aspirants are supposed to do a research on the different avenues available for them, decide about the profile and the industry that excites them.
· They need to their own skills which they would fit in the role.
· They need to identify the gaps between the desired skills and the skills that you inherent.
· And need to always bridge these gaps through.
